Viola Helene Peterson (nee Reierson), born Feb 14 1921 in Edberg AB, passed away on Nov. 14, 2011. Predeceased by loving husband Gordon, sister Elvia–semicolon– survived by daughters Gail (Doug) Smith and Merri-Ann (John) Wojcicki, Grandchildren Christopher Smith, Cameron (Olivia Godfrey) Smith, Lauren (Jon) Cockerton (nee Smith), Matthew (Demara) Wojcicki, Michael Wojcicki and Mark Wojcicki, Great Grandchildren Andrew Cockerton, and Avrie Wojcicki. Also survived by brothers Ray (Joyce), Leroy (Marcine), Ed, George (Maria), and Lawrence (Miriam)–semicolon– as well as Brother-in-Law Roland Peterson, Sisters-in-law Margaret-Ann (Hugh) Puffer (nee Peterson), Alice (Larry) Bell (nee Peterson), Marion Anderson (nee Peterson) and Jean Peterson plus numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.
Viola served in the RCAF, in the rank of Leading Airwoman, and was posted to London, England during WW II. Prior to joining the RCAF, Viola and sister Elvia put their talented craft-making hands to work in Vancouver riveting aircraft. During her posting she had occasion to get together with Gordon whom she knew from the neighbouring community of Meeting Creek AB–semicolon– Gordon was serving with the RCAF in the rank of Flight Lieutenant. After the war Viola returned home to Canada where she and Gordon continued seeing each other, getting married in 1947. Viola and Gordon began their married life in Vegreville AB where they owned and operated a business. Their daughters, Gail and Merri-Ann were born there and shortly thereafter the family moved to Edmonton. Gordon started a real estate firm and Viola worked in the office. She was also actively involved in Eastern Star and Job’s Daughters. Vi and Gordon made sure their home was always welcoming to relatives and friends alike.
Her family extends their gratitude to all of the Staff on 3rd Parker at Lynnwood Extended Care and Dr.’s Henderson and Buchinski for their amazing support and care during her time with them.
At her request, no formal service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lynnwood Extended Care Facility 3rd Parker MH Unit (8740 – 165 Street Edmonton AB T5R 2R8 attn: Diane Burpee).
