Verne Joseph MacKenzie died peacefully with family at his side on January 28, 2017, just shy of his 78th birthday.
Born in Cape Breton Dad was shaped by the island and family on the east coast. He moved his young family to Alberta in 1964 and became a fiercely proud Albertan. With Florence, his wife of 55 years, they built a life in Edmonton and raised three children: Debbie, Laverne and Terrance. Dad loved his family and cherished family times. Dad was deeply proud of his grandchildren, Alexander and Sarah, and was in awe of their every accomplishment. He lived a life of faith, fun and family.
Dad was legendary for the stories he told while fiddling with a pipe he could never seem to get lit! Along with being a modern Dad who did dishes and loved to cook, he was also a carpenter, plumber, electrician, landscaper and whatever else he and Mom needed to tackle for the many improvement projects they dreamed up and accomplished together.
Dad was an intelligent man who voraciously read newspapers and books. He was strong, capable, kind and had a great sense of humour. He spent his career at Edmonton Transit and in retirement sold real estate.
In addition to immediate family, Dad will be missed by Fr. Archie MacKenzie of Edmonton, older sister Carmel of St. Catharine’s, brother and sister-in-law Michael and Sadie MacKenzie of Big Beach, and brother-in-law Jack MacMullin of Boisdale. He was pre-deceased by his mother Mary Elizabeth and father John Joseph, brothers and sisters Basil, Raymond, Norma, Theresa, sister-in-law Arlene MacInnis and brother-in-law Leonard MacMullin. There is likely a rousing game of cards underway.
Thanks to the Evansburg Home Care Team, Westview Health Centre and the U of A Hospital Emergency Department for their care and compassion.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Reverend Archie MacKenzie on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at Annunciation Church, 9420 – 163 Street, Edmonton at 10:30 a.m. with a Prayer Service taking place 1 hour prior.
