It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend Doug Hawrelak at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. He passed away peacefully in the loving arms of his partner, Miriam.
Doug was predeceased by his mother, Pearl (nee Batiuk) in 2007 and by his father, Stephen William Hawrelak in 1996.
After obtaining a BSc in Chemistry (Honours) from the U of A, Doug acquired a PhD in Biochemistry/Genetics from MIT and worked with cancer research at the U of A for over a decade before deciding to take an early retirement.
Doug then applied his analytical skills to stock market investing and enjoyed the monthly meetings with his investment club.
Doug enjoyed curling at the Crestwood Curling Club and engaging in lively post game discussions.
An accomplished bridge player at the Edmonton Bridge Club, Doug was an exemplary partner and opponent.
Doug will be profoundly missed by his devoted partner Miriam La Giorgia, family members, friends, Crestwood neighbours, as well as his many friends at the curling, investment and bridge clubs.
