Sister Alice Toullelan passed away serenely on October 17, 2015 at the age of 94 years. Her passing marks the end of the first generation of the family of Jean-Baptiste Toullelan (1888-1977), born in Ploëzal, Brittany, France and of Marie-Jeanne Boulanger
(1896-1974), born in Grande Clairière, Manitoba.
In 1946, at the age of twenty-five, she chose to follow her vocation and entered noviciate of the Grey Nuns in St. Albert. While pursuing religious studies in noviciate, she completed high school by correspondence and obtained a teaching certificate. Sr. Alice taught for thirty-two years in First Nation mission schools and in public schools in Alberta and Saskatchewan. After retiring from education, she worked as a Pastoral Assistant for Annunciation Parish in Edmonton for four years after which she served as volunteer leader of bible study groups for more than twenty years. She valued very highly the many friendships developed at Annunciation Parish.
A person of deep faith, Sr. Alice was passionate about life-long learning. Her studies included a Bachelor of Education at the University of Ottawa (1965), a Master of Arts, Religious Education at Fordham University in New York (1970), and a Master in Sacred Theology (1981) at the University of Toronto. Throughout her seventy years as a Sister, she was devoted to applying her knowledge and skills to work carried out in the spirit of the mission of the Grey Nuns and their foundress St. Marguerite d’Youville.
The Sisters, family and friends will remember a welcoming, caring, creative, autonomous and determined person whose joie de vivre would light up a room. The most important aspect of her religious life has always been to be attentive to those who face struggles and to provide support, hope and encouragement.
Sister Alice leaves to mourn seven nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her parents Jean-Baptiste Toullelan and Marie-Jeanne (Boulanger)–semicolon– sisters, Eugénie (Marcel Ferré), Virginie (Louis Ferré)–semicolon– brother Armand Toullelan–semicolon– niece Estelle (Ferré) Lepage–semicolon– and twin nephews Paul and Gilbert Ferré who deceased shortly after birth.
The Grey Nuns of St. Albert and Edmonton, and the extended family express our sincere appreciation to the staff of Youville Home for their compassion and care provided since June, 2014.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Albert Funeral Home, 9 Muir Drive, St. Alberta, at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, October 26, 2015. Interment will follow at St. Albert Catholic Church Cemetery.
