It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shiu Yet Mah on 8 April 2022 at the age of 93. Shiu Yet was born in Tone Long Village, Bak Sa District, County of Toisun, Guangdong Province. He attended school in China and Hong Kong with his two brothers. Shiu Yet’s father had immigrated to Canada at the turn of the twentieth century but was not allowed to bring his family to Canada until after World War II when the Chinese Exclusion Act was abolished.
Shiu Yet arrived in Canada in March of 1952. He immediately started work at the Maple Leaf Café and Rooming House owned by his father and uncles in Edmonton. He later worked at various restaurants and eventually partnered with friends to run the Pig N Whistle Café on Jasper Avenue. He continued working in the restaurant industry and only took a leave for two years to care for his aging parents. Shiu Yet retired in 1985.
After retirement, Shiu Yet continued to volunteer in the local Chinese community. Shiu Yet was charitable and generous and loved helping relatives and friends. He enjoyed cooking, loved seafood, trying new foods, travelling, socializing, making jokes, and soaking in the hot tub. He was a humble and devoted man who will be dearly missed.
Shiu Yet was predeceased by his loving wife Kim Ung, to whom he was married to for almost 65 years. He is survived by his five children: Shirley (Gary), Hilda (Michael), Lena (Allen), Marshall (Wen), and Joanna; eleven grandchildren; and four great-grandsons. Shiu Yet also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service to honour Shiu Yet will be held on Saturday, 23 April 2022, 11:00 a.m. at Connelly-McKinley 10011-114 Street, Edmonton
