Selina left us August 29, 2012, peacefully, in the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre, in her 98th year. She was predeceased by her adored husband, John “Irish” and her oldest son, Ernest. Selina is survived by her son, Dennis (Donna)–semicolon– and daughter-in-law, Shirley. Also surviving with wonderful memories of a vibrant, gracious and loving Grandma are Janice Smyth (Steve Jakes), JoAnne Hughes (John) and Dwayne Smyth, and her great-grandchildren Hunter, Scott, Selina, David, Evan and Carmen.
Born in South Shields, England, Selina immigrated in 1929 when 13 years old to Winnipeg with her parents, Willie and Selina Shoebridge, and her sister Florrie. The following year, she began her long service at Eaton’s where she met her life’s love, John. She worked through many responsible positions at Eaton’s in Winnipeg and Edmonton and then was amongst the first employees to start up the Alberta Health Services. We treasured her beautiful soprano
voice, her boundless energy and her open, loving nature.
Special thanks to Colleen Friesen, her very dear, steadfast friend. Also thanks to Diane Perkins and the gentle kindness of the staff of 7Y and to Olga, her special companion. A private service has taken place.
Donations in memory of Selina may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice.
