It is with immeasurable sadness that Salvatore DiMaio, known to many as Sam, age 80, passed away from ALS on July 25, 2018 at Sturgeon Community Hospital in St. Albert, Alberta.
He was born in Ruvo Del Monte, Potenza, Italy on July 8, 1938. Sam was blessed with a loving family and is survived by his wife, Kirsten DiMaio–semicolon– his three sons: Mario (Christina), Michael, and Sal–semicolon– as well as his three granddaughters–semicolon– the joy of his life, Marina (Quinn), Carmela, and Daniela–semicolon– and his extended family in Europe. He will be deeply missed by all of his family as he has departed his earthly home for his heavenly home.
Sam was the eldest of three children. He immigrated to Canada in 1958 where he embraced his new home in Edmonton, Alberta, and was proud to call himself a Canadian. Sam was married to Kirsten in 1962 and was blessed with 55 years of marriage. Together they created a life and home filled with love, music, and beautiful memories. They moved to St. Albert as a family in 1974 and have resided there in a community that he loved and cherished. Sam had many friends and clients from his career as a hairstylist over the past 45 years, and many of them he considered dear friends. He was also a loyal fan of the Edmonton Oilers, and an Edmonton Eskimos season ticket holder for over 35 years. They were passionate about travel and visited numerous places over five continents. Anyone who knew Sam knows that he was always positive, passionate, full of energy, and had a zeal for life that inspired everyone around him.
It is with immense gratitude that our family would like to thank the ALS Society of Alberta for their overwhelming support of ALS patients and their families. The ALS Society was a true blessing to our family, helping to make each day the best it could be during some very challenging years. We would also like to thank Dr. Rene Wong, Dr. Mark Heule, Dr. Wendy Johnston, and Dr. Erika MacIntyre, Lindsay Boddez from Alberta Health Services and Christy Reschke with ALS Alberta and their amazing teams and support staff.
“I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes in him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned–semicolon– he has crossed over from death to life.” John 5:24
