On May 24th, 2015, Russ died peacefully at the age of 72 with Marj, his wife and best friend, and his daughter and his son by his side. He shuffled off this mortal coil leaving a legacy of service to his family and community.
Russ was a dedicated coach, curling official, golfer, avid fly fisherman, businessman, and a lover and patron of the arts. Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Russ split his early childhood between Vancouver and the Dominican Republic, eventually returning to Alberta. He graduated from the University of Alberta.
Russ leaves behind Marj, his wife of 49 years–semicolon– his daughter Barb (Ken) Galm of Edmonton, and his son Mike (Jen) Purdy of Vancouver, BC. He was especially proud of his five granddaughters–semicolon– Selina Galm, Kristen Purdy, Jennifer Galm, Megan Purdy and Jamie Purdy. Russ is survived by his brother Alec Purdy of California.
Our family would like to thank the staff of the Cross Cancer Institute for the professional and compassionate care given to Russ.
No service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Russ to the Cross Cancer Institute Foundation.
“Now cracks a noble heart. Good night sweet prince: And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!”
