It is with profound sadness that the family of Rosalind Ann Sydie (Beard) announce the sudden passing of their beloved mother and grandmother at the Royal Alexandra Hospital June 10, 2019 in Edmonton, Alberta. Born in Birmingham, United Kingdom, ‘Ros’ immigrated to Canada in the 1960’s to launch her career as a professor of Sociology. Her post-secondary degree was a BA in Social Science (1962) from the University of Liverpool where she loved to tell stories of frequent social gatherings with the Fab Four. Ros then went on to obtain a Sociology Master’s Degree (1966) followed by a PhD (1970) both from the University of Alberta which would serve as her academic home for the next 50 years. A revered lecturer, a published author, an avid supporter of Women’s studies, and an overall trail blazer, Ros concluded her tenure at the U of A as the first woman to serve as Chair, Department of Sociology from 2000-2006.
Predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Campbell Sydie, Ros leaves behind two daughters; Annabelle Sydie-Smith (Kelly Smith) and Alexandra Sydie (Mark Davies) and her adored grandchildren (Bennett & Alice Smith, Isaac Davies), her younger brothers (Dennis & Douglas Beard) and their families, along with her extended family of lifelong friends, neighbours and colleagues.
Ros lived a wonderful life, full of meaningful work, world travel, dog walking, and entertaining friends and family. In her retirement Ros was a pillar of her community, remaining active as Professor Emeritus, Department of Sociology, volunteering for (and sometimes against) various development projects in Old Glenora. More importantly she was a faithful supporter of her grandchildren’s various sporting, dance, and school events.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that you please consider a donation in honour of Ros to the University of Alberta United Way campaign.
A Celebration of Life and a University Memorial are being planned for a later date.
