With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Ronan James Smyth at the age of 13 on May 5th, 2019. Finally on his own terms, Ronan took his last breaths surrounded by his loving parents and his Aunty Julianne.
Ronan was born at the Misericordia Hospital to Mark and Sarah Jane on February 12th 2006. He was a big brother to Aidan. He was a smart, athletic, kind, thoughtful 12 year old when he was diagnosed with a Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) tumor in August 2018. Ronan faced his terminal
diagnosis with courage, determination and humour. He had just graduated Grade 6 from Fr Leo Green Catholic Elementary School in June 2018. He was to attend J.J Bowlen Junior High School in September 2018. Sadly his diagnosis occurred shortly prior to school starting.
He fought a brave battle against cancer and he has left a lasting impression on how to live a life full of adventure, love and kindness. He is described by his brother as Crazy, funny, and weird, with a love for music, magic, hockey & all things sweet. To his friends he is known as the boy with the great hair, expensive taste, infectious laugh and lovingly known as Ron, Ronny, Ronana, Roner, Smitty31 and Big Duster.
Ronan will be forever remembered by his parents Mark & Sarah Jane Smyth; brother Aidan; maternal grandparents Patrick (Pat) & Rosaleen Toner; paternal grandparents Robert (Bob) & Doreen Smyth; Aunt Karla (Stephen) Rice; Aunt Julianne (Tim) Searle; Uncle Patrick (Susanna) Toner; Uncle Sean (Jennifer) Smyth; and Uncle Colin Smyth. Ronan is loved by many, and has a very large circle of cousins, extended family, friends, and teammates.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr Shona MacLachlan, the amazing team of Pediatric Home Care nurses, the ASSIST team and the Pediatric Oncology team at the Stollery for their loving care and support.
Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Monday May 13th at 10:30am. Ronan had a keen fashion sense and loved sneakers, the fancier the better. We encourage anyone attending the service, if they would like to, to wear their best kicks or their favourite shoes to add a little bit of Ronan–aphostrophe–s taste to the day.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Kids with Cancer Society, 11135 – 84 Avenue NW, Edmonton, AB., T6G 0V9.
