Rejeanne Marie Cecile Riopel (née Tellier)
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Rejeanne Riopel at the age of 83 from cancer.
Rejeanne was the eldest of seven tight-knit siblings born to Albert and Antoinette Tellier in Bonnyville, Alberta. She moved to Edmonton to work at AGT before marrying Alphonse, her husband of 50 years. As a young wife and mother, she used her many talents to manage a big family on a tight budget. She was a gifted seamstress, sewing professional-level costumes for her daughters’ tap-dance recitals and Klondike Days’ attire that was proudly worn by the whole family to the annual downtown Promenade. Where she truly shone was in the kitchen. A master cook, she never failed to impress, whether making her legendary tourtières or the latest recipe from the many cooking magazines she loved to read. No one left her table disappointed.
When the hard work of raising a family was behind them, mom and dad were able to enjoy time with their beloved grandchildren and winter getaways to Mexico with good friends Eva and Albert Fillion. After losing Al in 2011, Rejeanne lived a full and contented life at the Kensington Campus of Shepherd’s Care, where she forged treasured friendships with Margaret Donaghey, Maureen Hanic, and many other residents and staff. Happy memories of vacations in the tent trailer, Christmases and Thanksgivings with the Finnans, Tellier family reunions, and Hawaii and Vegas trips with her kids sustained her in her last days.
A guiding light and steady influence, our mother was the person we turned to for help and advice, and we will be lost without her. Left to mourn are her children Louise (Chris), Diane (Robert), Daniel (Karen), and Aline (Tom); grandchildren Matthew, Michelle (Jesse), Meagan, Jeffrey (Courtney), Joshua, Jordan, Isabella, and Sam; and great grandchildren Jacob and Natalie. She will be greatly missed by siblings Louis (Gabrielle), Germaine, Lorraine (Patrick), Gerry (Jane), Roger, and Denis, and sister-in-law Marion. Rejeanne was predeceased by her husband Alphonse, daughter Suzanne, parents Albert and Antoinette Tellier, brother-in-law Jean Hogue and sister-in-law Valda Tellier.
The family wishes to express immense gratitude to all who cared for Rejeanne with compassion in her final months, including her physician Dr. Karen Bidniak and the staff at the Cross Cancer Clinic, the Sturgeon Hospital, and Foyer Lacombe. Special thanks go to son-in-law Robbie for providing so much love and assistance over the several months mom stayed with him and Diane.
In accordance with Rejeanne’s wishes, the family will hold a private interment, with a Celebration of Life to be arranged when we can safely gather again. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation (800 College Plaza 8215 – 112 Street Edmonton, AB, T6G 2C8) or Covenant Foundation (3C60-11111 Jasper Ave NW, Edmonton, AB, T5K 0L4).
