Our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather, Peter Dietrich Kowalewski, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 with his wife and granddaughter by his side.
Peter was born on March 20, 1928, in Kalingrad, Germany and grew up with his sister Gisela Kowalewski (Poloczek). He went on to bravely fight in World War II as a translator and messenger alongside the Americans.
Peter married the love of his life, Margaretha Schaefer, on August 21, 1947, in Goldbach, Germany. In 1953, they immigrated to Canada and settled down in Edmonton, Alberta. They had two children, Gordon and Patricia. Peter was a loving husband and father and always prioritized spending time with family. In fact, he built a cottage at the lake, where he and his family spent most of their summers swimming and fishing. Aside from his family, Peter loved gardening and gained much joy from cultivating a colorful and beautiful backyard.
Peter will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 74 years, Margaretha; son Gordon Kowalewski; grandchildren, Nicole Spencer (Robby) and Renee Kowalewski (Richard) and great grandchildren, Jasmine Kowalewski (Mike), Jocelynn Spencer, and Hunter Kowalewski. He will also be dearly missed by friends and family in Germany.
Peter is predeceased by his daughter, Patricia and his sister, Gisela.
Memorial donations may be made to the Memorial Society in Edmonton, 1108, 10235 – 124 St. T5N 1P9.
