Patrick (Paudie) Fitzgerald
Pat Fitzgerald, aged 71, passed away peacefully on September 14th, 2021 with his family by his side after a long battle with cancer.
Pat was born in August of 1950, in Ireland. He grew up the fourth eldest of eleven siblings on a farm in Ballydavid, County Kerry. In his late teens, Pat went to Rockwell College culinary school, and he became a chef in England at age 20. It was there where he met his partner, Kathy O’Brien. They married in Toronto, Canada, in 1974 and then started a family in Alberta in 1978.
Pat was an adventurer and a man of many trades. He was a journeyman carpenter, in the Armed Forces, a firefighter, a painter, and he started his own construction company in Devon, Alberta. Pat was an amazing father to Steven and Jenny, taking them on many camping and skiing trips, and he coached their soccer teams. He and his family moved back to Ireland in 2000. He spent many happy days walking the beaches, socializing and going to Kerry and An Gaeltacht GAA matches each weekend.
Pat moved to Prince Edward Island in 2008 where he made many close friends whom he touched with his generous and kind spirit. He received diplomas in counselling and went on to use his knowledge while volunteering on crisis lines and at a hospice. Pat became a valued member of the Benevolent Irish Society (BIS) in PEI and went on to become the President. He had a knack for telling jokes on stage and discovered his talent for acting and performing in theatre later in life. As a native Gaelic speaker, he also taught popular courses in Irish language and Celtic spirituality at the local college.
In 2019, Pat moved back to Edmonton to be closer to his children and grandchildren. His family cherished the last two years spending time with Pat and enjoyed going for trail walks and having long chats over coffee. He always kept everyone laughing with his unique sense of humour. His family were always able to rely on Pat for love and support. He has touched all our lives deeply and will be so sadly missed.
Pat is survived by Kathy; his children, Steven and Jenny; his daughter in-law, Breena; his three grandchildren: John Paul, Thomas, and Aisling; his siblings: Jack, Maire, Martin, Tom, Stephen, Noel, Eileen, Ann, and Brendan; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; nieces; nephews and extended family and friends in Canada, the United States, England and Ireland. He was predeceased by his brother, Joe, and his parents, Patrick and Kathleen.
