1931 – 2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of NEWTON SUN CHONG WONG, of Edmonton, Alberta, formerly of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, on December 23, 2020. He succumbed to Covid-19 after a valiant fight.
Newton was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Wei Ting, in 2010.
He is survived by his sons, Ron (Lita) and Gordon (Roselle), daughter Shirley and grandchildren Melanie and Andrew.
Newton was born in 1931 in Gao Yi Hong Village, Toishan County, Guangdong Province, China. He married Wei Ting in 1947. They had son Ron before Newton moved to Edmonton in 1950. He joined his father, Wong Ho Lai, who had previously emigrated to Edmonton from China in 1912.
Newton began work in a Chinese restaurant while self studying English. After years of hard work, he was able to bring his wife and son Ron to Canada in 1956. He was eventually joined by his mother, Wong Wai Har, brothers Ken and Wing, sister Mei Zow and numerous extended family in Edmonton.
In 1957 Newton moved to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories with his good friends Jim Pon, Randy Pon, and Calvin Mark. Together they established a number of prominent businesses in the city. Newton was a respected member of the community. In 1960, Wei Ting, Ron, Gordon and Shirley (who had all remained in Edmonton) joined Newton in Yellowknife. Newton considered his time in the North as the best days of his life.
In 1993, after 36 years in Yellowknife, Newton retired to Edmonton with his wife. They travelled the world together. He became a leading member of the Wongs’ Benevolent Association of Edmonton.
Newton will forever be loved and remembered by his children, grandchildren, extended family and numerous friends. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private service will be held at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home.
