Dr. Dave Coughlan passed away suddenly but peacefully at home in Edmonton.
He will be remembered by Frances, his wife–semicolon– and children Helga Shield (Dan), Frank (Gina), Jonathan (Josie), and Monica Anderson (David). Dave is also survived by beloved grandchildren: Alexandra, Georgia, Ella, Patrick, Avena, Connel, Xavier, Rhys, Henry and Thomas, as well as Blake, Ryan, and many relatives, colleagues and friends in Canada, Ireland and abroad.
Dave was born and raised in Galway, Ireland, where he was educated by the Jesuits. He later graduated from University College Galway. After arriving in Canada in 1968, Dave practiced as an anesthesiologist at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for over forty years, including many years as Chief of the Department. His career was a tribute to his profession. Dave was an avid reader who enjoyed spirited debates about religion, history and politics. He will be greatly missed.
A Prayer Service will take place at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, January 14 at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011-114 Street, Edmonton. Reverend Paul Kavanagh will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, January 15 at 10:30 am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 9830 – 148 Street. Luncheon to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Dave may be made to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.
