It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maurice R. Legris on July 26, 2022, at the age of 90.
Maurice was born in Edmonton in 1931 to his parents, Alice and Wilfred Legris. He was educated at universities in Ottawa, North Carolina, and Oregon, and he spent three decades as a Professor of English Literature at the University of Alberta, during which he served as Chair of the English Department and established the English Department at Faculte St. Jean. He retired from the university as Professor Emeritus in 1997.
He loved teaching, mountain climbing, regaling his grandchildren with magical stories and taking impromptu trips with Mary Ann, his wife of 62 years.
Maurice spent many years volunteering on Parish Councils of several Catholic churches, serving on the board of the Centre D’accueil Et D’Établissement Du Nord De L’alberta (a Francophone organization devoted to helping new immigrants become established in Alberta), and working on committees to increase the visibility of community colleges throughout Alberta.
Maurice is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; son, Andre; daughters, Louise (Tony) and Yvonne (Kelly); his six grandchildren: Annie, Marie, Christine, Marc, Kate and Sarah; his brother, Marcel; his sister-in-law, Diane; and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Raymond.
Prayer service will take place at 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 29, and Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 30, 2022, both at St. Joachim Catholic Church, 9928-110 St NW in Edmonton, officiated by Rev. Philippe Insoni. Private interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

I worked with Maurice as his editor at Oxford UP. He was a wonderful author and a delight to work with. My thoughts are with his family.
David Gay says
Maurice was a devoted teacher and department chair who made the U of A a better place in both English and French. It was always a joy when he visited colleagues on campus in his emeritus years. His many personal and professional virtues warmed our hearts. Peace and comfort to Mary-Ann and family.
