Mary Elizabeth Anne Ellis Carroll passed away in the early morning of February 7th, 2021 peacefully in her sleep. Born in 1926 in Los Angeles, on the 150th Anniversary of American Independence in a blaze of fireworks. The morning she passed, the air twinkled and danced full of ice crystals, like a star burning out.
When she was very young, her family move from Los Angeles back to Toronto. At 12, her father tragically passed away and Mary went to live with her Grandmother, Emma Louise Baker in Dunham, Quebec until she was a young woman. Mary absolutely adored her Grandmother Emma. Mary moved to Montreal where she met her husband, Thomas Dionne Carroll, and they moved to Rosemere, Quebec where she eventually raised her 6 children on her own.
Mary was predeceased by her father, George Lloyd Ellis and her mother, Marjorie Macfie Baker; sister, Katherine Hamilton Ellis Patterson; brother, George Lloyd Ellis Jr., and her daughter, Melissa Jane Carroll.
She was a loving mother to her 6 children, Thomas Edouard Dionne Carroll
(Rebeca Valdez Dionne ),Timothy George Ellis Carroll (Beverly, nee Larssen), Melissa Jane Carroll , Rosemary Anne Hamilton Carroll (Michael Necula), Margaret Megan Louise Carroll and Peter Joseph Tobin Carroll. She was a proud Grandmother to Jesse Carroll, Emma Katherine Tecla Carroll, Tianda Alice Aurora Carroll, Alejandro Maximiliano Dionne-Valdez and Elvie Mary Carroll; great grandmother to Savannah Billie Carroll, Liam Christian Dionne Zelaya, Aiden Thomas Dionne Zelaya, and Nolan Maximiliano Dionne Zelaya;
and aunt to David, Mark, Gregory, Michael and Jennifer Ellis and Christopher Stewart Patterson.
Her family was everything to her, her path was hard at times, raising 6 children on her own, however, she managed to provide all necessities and more for her children. She had a special knack for making every holiday and every season special. She was an avid collector of Canadian antiques and had an incredible eye for seeing the beauty in everyday items. She also was a great admirer of Inuit Art which lead her position of Executive Assistant at La Fédération des Coopérative du Nouveau- Québec, which promotes and sells the works of the Inuit sculptors and artists work which in turn supports their local communities. She loved being a part of the Federation and worked there until she retired in 1995, at which point she moved to Alberta to be closer to more of her children and grandchildren.
She deeply loved her pets and she was an amazing gardener, she created magic gardens wherever she lived. She loved being in the outdoors, enjoyed downhill and crossed country skiing and golfed well into her 80’s. She was an amazingly strong woman, she connected easily with people, was very creative, smart and funny. In fact, her care takers at her long term care unit said she had been especially funny in the last two weeks of her life.
A special thank you to Covenant Health, Edmonton Care Centre for their kindness and care.
A family Celebration of Life will be held in Dunham, Quebec, where Mary spent most of her childhood and where several generations of her mother’s family lived.
Mary will be missed but never forgotten.

I am honored to have known Mary when she worked at la Federation des Coopératives du Nouveau Québec. I am saddened to hear of her loss. Mary was a genuinely nice and fun-loving person. She had a smile that brightened the day of everyone around her. She worked closely with my father who considered her a friend as well as a colleague. My families hearts are with you and your family.

I was a very young child when I was neighbours with the Carroll’s.
I remember my mother Karin Davis and Mary Elizabeth Carrol talking at length about art, culture and gardening . I remember them laughing a lot together.
My mother speaks highly of Mary. She was a wonderful person and leaves behind a beautiful legacy of children and grandchildren.
