Marjorie Dunn Flook

8842cb481b1df5de14f1fd00b60ed4c0 lg

Marjorie Vere Flook, known to those who love her as Gerry, passed away peacefully on Sept 30, 2014. Gerry was born in Strathmore, Alberta on Feb 23, 1926 to Mary and Frederick Dunn. Her mother Mary was a private school teacher, who proudly remembered teaching the basics of reading and writing to a brilliant first grade student, former Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed. Her father, Frederick, was an internationally respected stamp collector and avid nature lover. Both parents were hard working Canadian pioneers from the United Kingdom.

Gerry was predeceased by her beloved husband of 62 years, William Arthur (Bill) Flook in 2006 and younger, twin siblings, Phyllis Yvonne Hardy and Nigel Frederick Dunn both in 2009.

Gerry is lovingly survived by many friends and family including her son, Dr Nigel Flook (wife Maureen)–semicolon– grandchildren Adam (wife Staci), Robert (wife Danielle) and Claire–semicolon– Gerry’s daughter, Virginia (Ginny) Cathcart (husband Jim)–semicolon– grandchildren Debbie, Wendy (partner Doug) Lori (husband Peter)–semicolon– great-grandchildren Justin (wife Brittany), Mitchell and Kayla.

Gerry loved life and enjoyed every bit of it. She survived a rugged childhood in a 1 room cottage on the prairies, a submarine torpedo attack during World War 2, a mutiny on a ship while on her way to join her husband in Jamaica after the war and the birth of two very large babies in the bedroom of her house in rural Jamaica. Throughout her whole life she enjoyed her family, fashion and tending to her homes. She loved to read, socialize and knit cuddly toys that warmed the hearts of many young children snuggled in their beds. Gerry loved animals, especially Mugsy, and she was a special friend and supporter of the Storyland Valley Zoo. She is greatly missed, but her love will always live in our hearts.

The family is very grateful for the support and care Gerry received From Dr. Marjan Abbasi at the Misericordia hospital, many highly skilled and caring physicians and nurses at the University of Alberta Hospital and Dr. Susan Low and staff of the Good Samaritan Southgate Care Centre in Edmonton.

Family and Friends will be invited to attend a private celebration of life.

Dear Nigel, Maureen, Virginia and Jim,

I noted the passing of your mum and images of she and your dad flooded back. They were such a fun loving couple and always so charming. Clearly they passed that charm and good looks to Nigel and Virginia. I hope that you will have great comfort that at least for much of her life it was comfortable and happy.
I am thinking of you all and remembering your mum and you in my prayers.

    Love Susan

Your mum and dad were always so kind to me – including me in your family vacations, taking us to the zoo or reaching out to Ted and I when we lived in Edmonton… with Gerry”s passing, the last family member from “The Great Generation” is gone. I am so sorry.
    Pammy
