It is with great sadness that her family announces that Margaret passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 12, 2017.
Margaret was born in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, the only child of Robert “Bob” and Cecilia “Cis” Mitchell, and grew up in Petone. After Wellington Girls College, she was accepted for the Physiotherapy School in Dunedin. There she met and married Michael, then a medical student, 54 years ago. Their children, Iain (Nancy), Jania (Calvin) and Kristen (Jon) were born in Dunedin (NZ), Hamilton (NZ) and Melbourne (Aust.). As a young bride and mother, Margaret moved frequently, always caring for her family with love and affection, before settling in Edmonton in 1972.
Margaret trained as a volunteer and volunteer leader with the Junior League of Edmonton, of which she was president in 1983/84. Soon afterwards she travelled Northern Alberta and Canada as a Research Associate in Epidemiology at the Cross Cancer Institute. She returned to volunteer work with the Festival of Trees, serving as Chair in 1991 and 1992, and then as Coordinator for several years.
She was a competitive tennis player and later enjoyed golf. She loved her family, her dogs, cooking, entertaining, knitting, crosswords, walking and travelling. She was kind, compassionate and a mentor to others, while maintaining a quiet determination and independence.
Margaret will be greatly missed by her husband, children and grandchildren (Kieran, Nick, Evan, Brendan, Will, Fiona and Thomas).
In lieu of flowers donations may be sent in Margaret’s memory to the Capital Care Foundation/Grandview.
The family express their thanks for the excellent care provided by the staff of Capital Care Grandview during Margaret’s last years. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 2:00 p.m., at St. Paul’s United Church, 11526 – 76 Avenue, Edmonton, AB.
