On Friday, September 7, 2018 Betty Cherry passed away peacefully after a brief illness at the age of 94.
Betty was born in Brockville, Ontario, the youngest of six children. The family moved west to settle in Alberta, where her father was a teacher in a number of rural communities. After high school Betty worked and saved to fulfill her dream of becoming a nurse, graduating from the Toronto General Hospital Nursing Program in 1948. She returned to Edmonton to begin working in the University Hospital where she met Richard Cherry. It soon became obvious that this hardworking, dedicated, somewhat charming medical intern would become her soulmate and partner throughout 55 years of marriage and family life until his death in 2007.
Whether as nurse, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, wife or mother, Betty gave her utmost because to do less than her best just wasn’t in her nature. And we whose lives were privileged enough to be touched by hers are all the richer for it.
Betty will be lovingly remembered by her children, Maureen (Bob) McRory, Pat (Elizabeth), Shannon, Michael, John and Roch (Val)–semicolon– her grandchildren, Jennifer and Daniel (Katie) McRory, Aaron, Jeffrey (Stacey) and Timothy (Sherri)–semicolon– great-grandchildren Aven and Isaac and her “adopted” grandchildren Derek (Jenny), Camille (Josh) and Missy–semicolon– by her numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the homecare staff of CBI for their kind and considerate care over the past two years and to MacEwan University Health Clinic for their compassionate and expert support during Betty’s illness.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. on September 14, 2018 at St. Matthew Church, 13131-86 Street, Edmonton.
For those who so choose, donations may be made to The Mustard Seed, Box 1842 Station Main, Edmonton AB T5J 2P2 or to a charity of one’s choice.
