The Hon. Joseph John Stratton, Q.C. passed away peacefully at the age of eighty-eight years.
Joseph (Joe) was a devoted husband, and a caring father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Joe is survived by his loving family, his wife of sixty-three years, Philomena, and his children David (Marlene), Joseph (Sabine), Maureen, Janice (Ian Robinson), Kenneth (Virginia), Douglas (Margit), and Barbara (William Cramer), and thirteen beloved grandchildren, John (Ellen), Lisa, Patrick, Laura, Mary, Brian (Julie), Diana, Katharine, Peter, Andrew, Matthew, Grace, Samuel, and two beloved great grandchildren Alice and Maeve.
Joe was predeceased by his sister Mary, infant son Gerard, and his son-in-law Robert Lemieux.
Joe was highly respected as a lawyer and served on various committees of the Law Society of Alberta, including terms of elected service as a Bencher. His professional life continued with his appointment to the Court of Queen’s Bench (1980) and then the Court of Appeal (1987). As a young man, Joe served in the R.C.N.V.R. in World War II, engaged in convoy escort duty in the North Atlantic. Throughout his life, Joe enjoyed golf and played at the Royal Mayfair Golf and Country Club. He enjoyed lake life at the family cottage on Betula Beach, Lake Wabamun. Joe also valued his association with The Legal Forum.
The family thanks Joe’s wonderful caregivers, the fifth floor team of Rosedale Estates, Dr. Faye Smith, Caseworker Patti Roebuck and the Alberta Health Care team, Myrna Lorzano, and the caring staff at the Edmonton General Continuing Care Center 9Y Palliative Care.
A Celebration of Life will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Basilica, 10044 – 113 Street, Edmonton.
If friends so desire, memorials may be made in Joe’s name to a charity of their choice.
