On Thursday May 14th, 2020, Johnny Sing Tam, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully to be with Our Lord and Saviour in Heaven at the age of 92.
Johnny Sing Tam was born on April 14th, 1928 in Toishan, Guangdong, China, to TAM YIN CHONG and NG YING WAH. From a young age as a teenaged boy, he worked extensively in the family business, a chain of drugstores located in Southern China, Macau and Dili East Timor. In January of 1960, Johnny married Margaret Ming Sum Lam at the Chinese Embassy in East Timor, and this year they were blessed with their Diamond Wedding Anniversary after 60 years of marriage. They raised one son David Shong-Tak Tam.
Johnny savoured being a hard-working man and accepted his challenges head on. He was also distinctly a people person, always generous, gregarious and a gentleman who invariably embraced a good laugh. From early on in life, he was adventurous in his enterprises and later when he was in Canada, he thoroughly enjoyed the risk-reward activities of the stock markets. He completed his career and took early retirement as a quality control inspector of asphalt shingles at Building Products of Canada (BP). Johnny was baptized along with Margaret at the Edmonton Chinese Alliance Church by Rev. Peter Poon in August of 1978, where they shared much fellowship. They also attended the Edmonton Christian Community Church and the Edmonton Chinese United Church.
Johnny will be lovingly remembered by his wife Margaret of sixty (60) years, his son David (Donna), and his grandchildren Matthew, Keith and Alexa. He is also survived by brothers Eddie, Jimmie, Henry and Peter along with numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives. He was predeceased by brothers YEE Yan, YEE Ye and YEE Lai and sisters Sylvia Kwan and Tina Choy.
The Visitation will take place between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 21st, 2020, at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home located at 10011-114 Street, Edmonton, Alberta. The Funeral Service will be held at the same location on Friday, May 22nd, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. Due to COVID-19, we are limited to a maximum of 50 people attending each gathering and therefore people are encouraged to join the Funeral Service live via the web link.
The family wishes to convey a special “Thank You” for their care and compassion, to all the staff at the Edmonton Chinese Seniors Lodge, to all the staff in the DAL (Designated Assisted Living) section of the Chinatown Multi-Level Care Centre and to all the staff of Unit 7 East at the Misericordia Hospital, in particular staff Dr. N. Madsen and a very “Special Thank You” to Registered Nurse Bianca Yan, who exemplified the utmost in care and caring to Johnny in his final hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edmonton Christian Community Church.
