Jack passed away peacefully on May 17, 2022, at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, after a rapid decline in health.

Jack is predeceased by his wife, Winona; parents, Thomas, and Pearl Mah; and sister, Margaret.

He will be deeply missed by his sons, Terry (Mary Lou) and Brian (Melody); grandchildren, Jocelyn, Alicia, and Tristen; step-granddaughters Carly and Chloe; his sister, Anna (Lloyd); and his many friends and relatives.

His friendly, cheerful, and complementary nature will be remembered by anyone who knew him. He was born in Taishan District in Guangdong, China, and immigrated with Pearl to rejoin with Thomas in Spirit River, Alberta when he was 16. While attending Alberta College in the late 1950’s, Jack was completely smitten upon passing by his stylish future wife, Winona, walking the other way on a sidewalk downtown, and in 1961, they began their marriage of 53 years. Jack graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in pharmacy and went on to work at various stores in and around Edmonton throughout his career, as well as being a partner in Stadium Drugmart. Pharmacy was his ideal career choice as it gave him the ongoing opportunity to make friends with his many customers and colleagues. Jack enjoyed sports and was a proud Edmonton football fan for nearly 60 years having been a season ticket holder since 1974. He also enjoyed playing ping-pong at the Central Lions Seniors Association, and he loved attending the Chinese New Year’s banquets for over 40 years. In each of his endeavors, his greatest treasure was always the good friends he made along the way.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, attendants, and pharmacists at the Foothills Hospital and at the Edgemont Retirement Residence for their compassionate care.

A Visitation will be held on June 24, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011 – 114 St. NW, Edmonton, followed by a Funeral Service ( at the same location), will be held on June 25, 2022, at 10:00 a.m., followed by interment at Northern Lights Cemetery, 15203 Campbell Rd., Edmonton.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to the Edmonton Humane Society (SPCA), 13620 – 163 St., Edmonton, Alberta, T5V 0B2.

    Terry and Brian and family
Our deepest condolences to both you and your families in the loss of your father and our friend Jack. We will miss his warm and friendly personality in our regular contact in person and later on line when his health did not permit it.
Our prayers are with you all and may Jack rest in peace as he is now reunited with his loving wife.
    Warmest regards,
    Wen and Alice

Dear Terry , Brian and family

Our deepest condolences for the loss of Uncle Jack. Both of your parents were great friends with mine for many many years. My dad so enjoyed going to the football games with your dad as well. I’m glad we were able to communicate by email after he moved down to Calgary and sending him pictures of my moms pastries that he enjoyed. Uncle Jack will be greatly missed.

    Love ,
Tina & Wayne Der and family
