With great sadness, we announce the passing of Helen on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at the age of 76 years. She will be forever loved and remembered by: daughter, Alyson Hrynyk of Edmonton, AB; sister, Mary Strutz (Walter) of Cupertino, CA; sister-in-law, Betty Kowalchuk (Terry) of West Vancouver, BC and brother-in-law, Jim Hrynyk (Margot) of Edmonton, AB; nieces, Virginia Weiss (Gerry), Danna Wright, and Sharon White (Troy) (of US); nephews, Andrew Kowalchuk and Warren Hrynyk (of CAN); grandnephews and nieces, Eric and Ryan Weiss, Shane and Caith Wright, Laurel and Alexander White (of US); extended family and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, David Hrynyk; brother, John Lingas; sister, Daphne Clements; brother-in-law, Keith Clements; nephew, Richard Strutz and her beloved cat Penelope.
Helen was born on April 27, 1942 to Aristides ( Harry) and Helen (Fotos) Lingas in Edmonton, AB, where her father managed the American Dairy Lunch restaurant and her mother was involved in academic and political causes. She earned a BSc (Nursing) from the University of Alberta in 1965. She worked for many years as a Public Health Nurse at the West End Clinic before leaving to raise a family and manage the family-owned Angelus Apartments.
She was an active member of the Laureate Epsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi and a much-in-demand bridge player. Both she and David were members of the Orchid Society of Alberta and volunteers for the Society–aphostrophe–s annual show.
Thank you to Dr. Jacob Easaw, nurse Yvonne, and the gastrointestinal oncology team at the Cross Cancer Institute, as well as to the doctors and nurses of Unit 5F3 at the U of A Hospital for their care during Helen–aphostrophe–s illness.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 10:30 am at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011-114 St, Edmonton, AB.
Donations may be made in Helen–aphostrophe–s memory to either the Alberta Cancer Foundation or the Edmonton Humane Society.
