Emilia Sansom passed away quietly in her sleep at the age of 101 at Extendicare Holyrood in Edmonton, where she had resided for about 10 years. She is finally reunited with her beloved husband, Carl, who has been waiting for her since 1952.
Never remarried, Emilia is survived by her four devoted children – Carmen Pearce, Philip (Sandra) Sansom, Claire Helmers and Janice MacNeil–semicolon– her younger sisters, Pauline Blais and Yvonne Perra–semicolon– nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and myriad nieces and nephews.
Emilia was a dynamo of energy and raised four rabble-rousing children by herself after her husband, Carl, tragically died of a heart attack when she was just 39 years old. Not only her children, but numerous temporary boarders enjoyed her hospitality and wonderful cooking over the years, and still remember her with great love. Hers was a home that was always ‘open for business’ and full of people happy to be there.
On her retirement from her paying job at Glenrose General Hospital in the cafeteria, she never stopped working, but began delivering meals to elderly and shut-ins for Edmonton Meals on Wheels for more than 15 years.
Cremation will take place and a Celebration of her Life will be held at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011-114 Street, Edmonton, on Thursday, January 15 at 2:00 p.m.
The family would like to thank the staff of Holyrood Extendicare for their unfailing service to Emilia during her long residence there in her battle with dementia. It was always much appreciated.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Edmonton Meals on Wheels.
