Upright Elizabeth

Upright (McKay), Elizabeth “Bette” passed away on June 19, 2019. We had just celebrated her 88th birthday.

Bette was born to Elizabeth and Robert McKay in Edmonton. She left Edmonton only briefly as a young woman in the 1950’s, before moving back to meet and marry her best friend, Neil Upright. Edmonton remained her home until 1989, when she and her family relocated to St. Albert. Bette was adored by her two children, Janice Olivier (and her partner, Sterling Worth) and Randy Upright (and his world traveling partner, Chirag Shah). Bette considered her lifelong friend Lauretta Dingwall and all of Lauretta’s family as her own. Lauretta, her husband James (Jim), and their three daughters, Tracy, Terri and Kim and the Uprights; spent weekends and vacations together. In 2002 Jim heartbreakingly passed away, followed by Tracy in 2017.

Bette had two brothers. Her older brother Robert (Bob) predeceased her in 2014 and her younger brother Doug is a resident of Sherwood Park. Bette had many nieces and nephews, but among them were Bette’s very special nieces, Marti Eppley and Katie Foss who made it a point to be with Bette as often as possible. We refer to Marti as our family’s angel!!

Other very special people in Bette’s life include Neil’s siblings, Russ Upright and his wife, Enes and younger sister, Patricia Taylor of Vancouver. Their children and grandchildren were all touched by Bette’s special love. Bette lost Neil’s younger brother David (Dave) in 2011. Dave was not only Neil and Bette’s brother, but also their lifelong business partner.

Bette made lifetime friends!! From her gang of friends from school to the many people Bette came to know and maintain contact with through her life and travels. All who knew her could tell you, Bette couldn’t find a bad word to say about anyone and knew how to find the best in all she knew. Though we couldn’t mention each friend, we must mention Alison Wedell. Alison was Bette’s co-worker, turned life-long friend and the reason for our family!! Alison played cupid and brought Neil and Bette together for their blind date 64 years ago.

We wish to express gratitude to the countless number of people who supported Bette. It really did take a village. First and foremost, our thanks to the team at the Citadel Care Centre who took care of Bette and, in the process, our whole family. Also, to the many from the Lynnwood Extended Care Centre and Sturgeon General Hospital, our gratitude is immense!

For those who would like to celebrate the life of Bette with her family, please join us at the Hotel MacDonald (10065 100th Street; Edmonton) on July 28, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. We will be gathering in the Jasper Room.

Instead of flowers, Bette would appreciate your offering of a kind gesture to someone who crosses your path. Bette’s legacy is more than enough for any good life and our appreciation and love will never fade. We love you Mama!!
