April 5, 1929 – August 6, 2021
We share the news of Ed’s unexpected death with a mixture of sadness and gratitude – overwhelming sadness that he is no longer physically here, and tremendous gratitude for the joy of having had him in our lives for so long. Ed touched the hearts of many people during his 92 years, and his countless tales tell the story of a life rich in love, adventure, adversity, resilience, triumph, serving others, and family, which was most precious to him. He was a businessman, a volunteer, an inventor, a builder, a hunter and fisherman, a traveler, and a storyteller.
Ed has been the strong roots of our family tree, and we will continue to grow on the solid foundation he created. He recently said, with a look of pure love, that the best gift he ever received was his wife of 66 years, Berthe, and his devotion to her has been beautiful to witness. He appreciated all his children for the individuals that they are and loved their spouses as if they were his own children. Greg and Jenny (Sande), Phil, Jocelynn and Roger (Belland), Karen and Greg (Klak), and Jim and Ann-Marie (Sande) have all had the honour of receiving his caring and gentle wisdom for many years. His grandchildren are left with huge holes in their hearts, but abundant special memories of time spent with Gramps, who ensured that Danielle (Graeme Southwood), Michelle (John Forte), Caitlin (Eric Minhas), Myles (Holly Mazur), Julia (Sunny Kullar), Brendan, Haley, Alyssa, and Connor felt very loved by him always. He was incredibly proud of the people that they are and welcomed their spouses and future spouses with open arms. His sense of humour, optimism, kindness, modesty, integrity, and honesty are just some of the qualities that made him so loveable, admired, and respected by all.
Ed died peacefully and with dignity, surrounded by love, but more importantly, Ed truly lived. We take comfort in knowing that Haley has caught his hand, given him a big squeeze, and welcomed him to his new life in Heaven. We will remember him with a tear of wanting him back and a smile of remembrance.
If you would like to honour Ed’s memory, a donation to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation would make him happy.
We will hold a private funeral service to honour Ed’s amazing life.

Thank you, Karen and I often talk fondly of our memories with Marc and Joanne and the fun times we had on the trampoline (with water), squirt gun fights, hockey games and practices on cold winter nights, exploring the neighborhood with the sleds and Marc’s wagon, devils hill, Joanne’s litebrite, and snakes and ladders “88 I hate, 88 I hate”. The Lavallee’s are a huge part of our best childhood memories. Thank you for thinking of us. – Jim
Dr. John and Mena Ares and Family says
Dear Berthe and Jim Sande,
We were very sad to hear of Ed’s death. What a wonderful man he was and how fortunate we were to know him. The St. John’s food bank benefited from his determination to make things easier for coworkers and clients. Volunteer, inventor, builder and storyteller really describes him well.
Jim, we are sorry for your loss and think of you often, especially times spent at pigeon lake.

Jim Sande says
Thank you so much for thinking of us. I remember Marc arriving at St Rose in Grade 7 and becoming friends right away. And I have vivid memories of Danny and Robert with Beatles haircuts and Lisa without a Beatles haircut. The dinners, juke box, foosball, shuffleboard, Atari, D&D, AD&D, nerds (the candy and us), taking over the living room table, Dr Are’s’ 1980 video recorder, a budgie, Danny’s soft spoken nature, Robert’s comedy, Lisa putting up with with 3 brothers, the lake, the boat, a hole in the boat, the cabin and spiders, ping pong, the tornado threat, the Mimi’s, Muriel with a cast, asteroids hitting Jupiter through a telescope, Tippy, at least 2 Tzu’s, Chantal’s letters, bonfires and a million other memories of my teens and twenties. I am grateful to the Ares family for their generosity, patience and for being such a huge part of my life and also for thinking of us now. Dad had such good memories of working hard with Mrs Ares, Mr Joly, and everyone else at the food bank. (Thanks for not letting him drive you too crazy Mrs Ares)
Thanks again
Jim
