Dr. David George McGowan passed away peacefully June 28, 2019 following a stroke he suffered on Father’s Day. David was born in Glasgow, Scotland on March 27, 1938, the only child of George and Janet McGowan. He graduated from medical school at the University of Glasgow in 1960. He married the ward sister, Elizabeth (Betty) McGowan, on June 11, 1962, whom he met when he was a resident at Stobhill Hospital. David and his pregnant wife and young daughter immigrated to Canada in 1965 and shortly after made their way out west, making Edmonton, Alberta home. David joined the W.W. Cross Cancer clinic in 1968 where he was for a time, the only radiation oncologist on staff. David went on to treat thousands of cancer patients, saving many of their lives. He was also a pioneer in oncology research and continued his research after his retirement in 2003, culminating in a co-authored study which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2011.
David McGowan is pre-deceased by his parents, George and Janet McGowan. He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth “Betty” McGowan; his children, Dr. Jacqueline (Jim) Rohloff, David (Sharon) McGowan, and Karen McGowan; his grandchildren, Laura (Chris) Davies, Kathryn (Craig) Clampitt, and Ashley (Matthew) McSweeney; as well as great-grandchildren, Mia, Hudson, and Noah.
For those who wish to pay their respects, a visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011 114 Street NW, Edmonton on Friday, July 5, 2019. A Funeral Service will take place at the same location at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2019. Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery, 1605 141 St SW, Edmonton.
