It is with great sadness and heavy hearts, that our family announces the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Doris Usher on February 24, 2011.
Doris was born in Namaka, Alberta on November 18, 1921, the fifth and youngest child of Theodore and Ellen Thorssen. Doris is survived by son, Graham (Paula)–semicolon– grandchildren, Rachel, Nathan and Max–semicolon– sister, Irene Sanden–semicolon– and numerous nieces and nephews. Doris was predeceased by her husband, Dave–semicolon– daughter, Diane–semicolon– brother, Leroy–semicolon– and sisters, Helen and Francis. Doris was a kind and gentle person with a passion for her community, a supporter and lover of the arts, and an avid gardener. Her life’s purpose was to create and nurture food and snack programs for inner city youth, because she believed every child deserved a chance. Our family would like to gratefully acknowledge the caregivers at Riverbend Retirement Community and at South Terrace Continuing Care. Your care for Doris was exceptional and in the end you were very much her family too.
A Celebration of Doris’ Life will take place at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 3, 2011, at McDougall United Church, 10025 Macdonald Drive NW, Edmonton.
In lieu of floral tributes, donations to the Alberta Alzheimer Society or the School Lunch Program through Edmonton City Centre Church Corporation would be greatly appreciated.

To Graham and Family,
Doris was such an amazing person, we were so honoured to have known her. She and Dave were very special to our parents, Pat and Fred Hagen. Pat is in a Long Term Care facility in Cold Lake and diagnosed with dementia, so we know what challenges you have faced in dealing with Alzheimers. Our family have thought of your parents often and now we know that Dave and Doris are with our father Fred. Your parents were wonderful people and we were blessed to have known them in our life time. Cherish the memories!
Sincerely, Pat Hagen and Family
