It is with deep sorrow and much love that the family of Dennis Albert DeChamplain announce his sudden passing on August 15, 2021 in Edmonton, AB at the age of 57 years.
Dennis’ life, love, and impact will be forever treasured by his wife Diana (née Jankovic); sons Matthew and Thomas; parents Irene and Normand; sister Donna de Castro (Tony); brothers Daniel (Sandra), and Darren; as well as numerous relatives, friends, and Edmonton’s close-knit Croatian community.
Dennis graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1985 and obtained his Chartered Accountant designation in 1988. After working for Coopers & Lybrand in Canada and in the U.K., he joined Canadian Utilities / ATCO in 1992 where he steadily moved up the ranks. Dennis became the Executive VP & CFO for both ATCO and Canadian Utilities in 2017. His insights, expertise, and resourcefulness – in finance and accounting and, more recently, sustainability – left an indelible mark on the ATCO organization.
Dennis was a force to be reckoned with both in his career and in his personal life. He was blessed with an old-school work ethic and inherited his Mom’s precise memory. He was driven and talented, and combined these traits with quick wit, kindness, humility, and integrity. He excelled in so many ways, even down to his grilling prowess at the barbeque. He was athletically gifted, and his quiet but intense competitiveness propelled him to many middle-distance and trail race victories including an Edmonton City record in the 1500 meters while in school. An extensive traveler with his family and with ATCO, he seemed to thrive in an ever-expanding comfort zone. A trip to Croatia in 2017 with Diana and Dennis’ parents also revealed how capable he was in all situations, such as when he maneuvered their car around detours and down secondary roads in order to circumvent congested highways due to forest fires, and to make their flights on time. He made it look like it was just another day commuting to the office.
Dennis dearly loved his family, his extended family, his work, and his work family. He was an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to be in his orbit. His example remains one of incredible achievement and fundamental goodness joined in the same person. It’s impossible to truly capture the hole his passing will leave in our lives. He will be missed, deeply, every day, by all of us who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Dennis’ Life will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at Connelly-McKinley 10011 114 St NW, Edmonton, AB. The Celebration will be live streamed for Dennis’ many distant friends and colleagues, as well as for those who prefer to attend virtually. Due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, the family requests that attendees wear masks, and regrettably, there will not be a reception.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dennis’ name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
