On July 22nd, Bruce Heming, loving father, grandfather, and dear friend to many, passed away suddenly in his home at the age of 78.
Bruce was born on December 1, 1939, in Ithaca, New York, and grew up in Whittier, California and Guelph, Ontario. A great lover of the outdoors and natural history, Bruce studied at university in Guelph, Ontario and Raleigh, North Carolina, where he earned his PhD. Bruce gained a tenured position at the University of Alberta in 1968 in the field of entomology. While on sabbatical in the Netherlands, in 1974, he met Karin van Battum, his future wife and lifelong companion. They were married in November 1976 and settled in the McKernan area of Edmonton to raise a family. Bruce and Karin shared a mutual love of the great outdoors, books, music, and frequent gatherings with friends and family. In addition, Bruce and family always maintained strong ties to the Netherlands.
Bruce is survived by his loving sons, Arthur (Stephanie) and Steven–semicolon– and his wonderful grandchildren, Clara, Miles and Brandt. All of Bruce’s countless friends will deeply miss his easy humour, boundless curiosity, and warm companionship. He remains a part of us.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011 – 114 Street NW, Edmonton.
