What is Family Service?
At Connelly-McKinley funeral home, serving our families beyond expectation is of the utmost importance, from making arrangements in advance to our post service support.
Our Family Service Consultants are dedicated to ensuring that whether you are planning ahead or winding up the estate affairs of a loved one, they will be there every step of the way.
Advance Planning is a way of sharing your story, caring for your family, and creating an event that will be cherished in their memories.
Make your choices now, so they don’t fall to your family later.
Making the choices for your family in advance gives them the comfort of knowing that the ceremony is perfectly in accordance with your wishes. This unique opportunity allows for you to tell your story the way you wish and gives the gift of your legacy to your family and friends.
People who make their plans in advance alleviate the financial weight of funeral costs, take care of most of the decision making, give certainty that your wishes are being honored and most importantly, your family is given the time and space to simply be together.
Pre-planning is determining the details of your final arrangements in advance. To some, this may sound like a difficult conversation. But putting a plan in place is actually a wise and caring thing to do. With a plan, you’ll reduce stress for grieving loved ones—and simply let them honor and celebrate your life, knowing things are happening just as you wanted. All your wishes. All with ease. Our trained and licensed Family Service Consultants offer extensive knowledge in creating personalized and unique services so that nothing will be left to chance.
A well-planned service provides a special place for family and friends to pay tribute to someone they love. It is the final act of care for loved ones, as well as an important first step in facing the reality of loss. You have the opportunity to remove some of the burden for someone making decisions, who may not be aware of your wishes.
You can have peace of mind by making your own arrangements now with Connelly-McKinley, instead of leaving your loved ones to arrange things alone. Nothing can take away the pain of their loss but planning ahead will ease their burden.
Your family will be relieved knowing you have expressed your wishes ahead of time.
Connelly-McKinley’s Advance Funeral Planning options will eliminate the uncertainty of funeral expenses and protect your family from rising costs. By planning now, you will avoid future inflation and enjoy the benefits of today’s lower prices.
Prearranging makes financial sense, you can choose from a variety of payment options, including simple monthly payments or fully funded plans.
We want you to feel confident and comfortable planning a service for yourself or a loved one. To aid you, we have created our Guide to Planning your Funeral Arrangements and other resources as a starting point. This guide will help you decide what’s important to your family and enter statistical information that will be required by the funeral home, like social insurance number, residency birth information, parents’ names and places of birth and so on.
Benefits of Pre-Planning
Certainly, there are many benefits that come with pre-planning:
- Experience the peace of mind that comes from knowing your loved ones will not be burdened with funeral decisions during their time of mourning and remembrance.
- Ensure that you are able to make all of your funeral and life celebration choices deeply personal, authentic to your own standards, lifestyle, and beliefs.
- Financially prepare for your service, getting an accurate estimate on the total cost and beginning the process of setting aside some funds or prepaying and locking in the costs for your service. This is another important way to ease responsibilities for your family and friends.
Our compassionate and experienced Family Service Consultants are prepared to offer helpful, empathetic assistance as you seek to plan your service. This is not a complicated or high-pressure undertaking—just a time of reflection, in which you can make sure that all of your wishes are recorded, your plans mapped out. Our staff will guide you through the process; you will have the opportunity to receive and complete your Personal Planning Organizer, which you can then safely store with all of your other important documents. Your consultant will go through all of the options and considerations as well as a personalized plan for prepayment if that is your choice.
The pre-planning process empowers you and your family and offers a large degree of comfort and assurance. To learn more about the process, please contact Family Service at your earliest convenience.

After Care Services
Grieving families are usually in no position to be thinking about what happens after a funeral. That’s why we at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Homes are here to help.
For most of us, there will never be a day quite like the one following the funeral of a loved one. Energy spent in preparing for the funeral gives way to profound weariness. With fewer distractions, the reality of loss seeps into places we may not have even known existed. Our thoughts don’t seem connected, it’s hard to think at all, and we are faced with even more decisions that have to be made.
People around us ease back into their routine. It’s hard to imagine how anyone could think clearly or even care about the many things that need to be taken care of following a loved one’s funeral.
That’s where Connelly-McKinley’s Signature Family Service Program comes in.
We offer After Care because we know it makes a difference to the families who have entrusted us to help them in their time of loss and from the losses we have experienced in our own family. We know how difficult the next few days and even months will be. We know how confusing and overwhelming everything can seem.
A trained, professional Family Service Consultant helps you begin the healing process by providing valuable “hands-on” assistance with many of the tasks (large and small) that must be dealt with. Bank account updates, Federal and Provincial notifications, timely insurance claims and Canada Pension Plan benefits are among the most pressing matters facing a survivor and may impact your financial well-being. We are ready to help you tackle them.
This is much more than just a document completing service.
All of our Consultants are Commissioners for Oaths, bonded and insured. We have a team of six with many different backgrounds and professional designations. Together, they can help with almost every situation that families find themselves in after a death. They also work very closely with government agencies like Service Canada, Provincial Health Care, and the Canadian Revenue Service to ensure you are receiving correct information about claims and taxes.
Here are some of the most common questions families have asked us in the past concerning our Signature Family Service Program.
Are there additional costs for After Care?
No! After Care is an exclusive follow-up program from Connelly-McKinley to the families we serve.
Is the Family Service Consultant employed by Connelly-McKinley Funeral Homes?
Yes. All of our Family Service Consultants work exclusively for our funeral home.
Can the Family Service Consultant come to my home?
If that’s what you feel comfortable with – then sure! Or you can meet our Family Service Consultant at one of our three chapel locations. Most families prefer to meet in the comfort of their own home and may even invite other family members to the appointment.
How soon after the funeral does the Family Service Consultant contact me?
Some programs like the Canada Pension Plan Benefits, may not be retroactive, meaning if a surviving family member qualifies for survivor benefits, those benefits only begin when the application is made and do not cover the time between the date of death and when the application is submitted. This is one of the reasons why our Family Service Consultants will contact you soon after the funeral (usually within one week of the service).
Why does Connelly-McKinley Funeral Homes offer such a service?
We know firsthand how difficult it is for grieving families to deal with unfamiliar tasks following a loved one’s death. We see it all the time.
Our Signature Family Service Program is our way of showing those who have entrusted us to help them in their time of loss with us that our service to their family does not end with the funeral service. And once again, no additional charges will ever be involved
