HAMILL, Sister Mary
Daughter of Wisdom
Sister Mary Hamill (Sr. Mary Bernard of the Blessed Sacrament), Daughter of Wisdom, passed away on February 5, 2012 at the age of 94 years.
Sr. Mary was born in Ballymoney, near Belfast, Ireland, on April 14, 1917, to Bernard and Madge (McNaughton) Hamill. In 1927, the family emigrated to Penhold, AB. During her highschool years she boarded at St. Joseph’s Convent in Red Deer, where she got to know the Daughters of Wisdom. She entered the Congregation and made Religious Profession in 1943, and then attended St. John’s University in Brooklyn, New York. Sr. Mary taught in New York for eight years, and then returned to Red Deer in 1951. She taught for twenty-two years in Alberta, either in Red Deer or Castor. During this time, she was Principal at Theresetta School, Castor, and in 1973 she was assigned to the work of administration in the Congregration which she did for fifteen years. She took up Pastoral Care in Ponoka, and in her later years at Grandview Extended Care in Edmonton. She returned to Red Deer in 1998, and was in Providence Centre Infirmary, Edmonton, when she passed away.
Sr. Mary was predeceased by her parents, four brothers, Henry, Jim, Bernard, and John. She leaves to mourn her sister, Bella, sisters-in-law, Hilda and Peggy (Charlie) Sevcik, several nieces and nephews and their families, and her religious community, the Daughters of Wisdom.
A Prayer Vigil will be held at Providence Centre Chapel, 3005 – 119 Street, Edmonton, AB at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 7, 2012. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Sacred Heart Parish, 5508 – 48a Avenue, Red Deer, AB. Interment will follow at the Red Deer Cemetery, 3830 – 55 Street, Red Deer.
