Obituary

Born the fifth of 11 children on January 29, 1925 to Herb and Nellie Sutherland of Palmer, SK., Kae passed away peacefully surrounded by family in Kelowna, BC on January 10, 2012 just two weeks before her 87th birthday. Sadly predeceased by her loving husband of 55 years Hal; sons Pat and Terry; siblings Ed (Doris), Lloyd, Mary, Irene, Don and Ken; and by her grandson Christopher. Lovingly remembered by her children Mary Ellen (Denis), Mike (Gwen), Tim (Peggi), Dan (Cheryl), Anne (Lorne), Barb (Peter), Joe (Sheila), Kathleen (Ian), Hal Jr. (Jennifer) and Irene (Tim). Kae was adored by her 19 grandchildren Mark, Troy, Brett (Danijela), Erin, Patrick, Meg, Courtney, Connor, Lawton, Keegan, Maddie, Cole, Dylan, Bridget, Griffin, Braeden, Cara, Macgregor and Finn; siblings Bruce (Shirley), Rose (Carl), Keith (Mona) and Myrt (Bill); in laws Keith, Olga, Helen, Art, Bill (Rita), Marguerite, Isabel, and Mary (Bob); and by Cheryl's children, Kelly, Travis and Nicole. She was proud to be matriarch of an extended family now numbering well into the hundreds. Joy, education, faith and family defined Kae's glorious time here on Earth. Gathering with family and friends to visit, sing and dance, Kae celebrated God's greatest gift - love. Family brunch after Sunday mass was a tradition Kae fostered which lasted to just this past week. Her keen mind spurred Kae to complete high school at sixteen, encourage post secondary education amongst all her children and to cherish a lifelong love of crosswords, puzzles and reading. Kae's strong faith and humble relationship with God helped her navigate many tragedies and trials in life. A strong believer in the power of prayer, Kae endlessly requested offerings on behalf of others and left a home scattered with favored snippets of sacred scripture. Kae loved coming from a large, close knit family and spent a lifetime stewarding one of her own. Wrapping her children in a life time of unconditional love, Kae gifted to them the security and confidence to succeed in any part of life. Our family thanks Dr. Rachel Carver for her extraordinary and thoughtful care and Kae's neighbors for their many special kindnesses. Prayers will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church at 9830 - 148 Street in Edmonton on Sunday, January 15 at 7:00 p.m. A celebration of Kae's life will also be at St. John's on Monday, January 16 at 11:00 a.m. with interment and reception to follow. In Kelowna, a Memorial Service will be held at St. Charles Garnier Friday, January 20 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow. Memorial donations in Kae's name may be made to the ALS Society of British Columbia (www.alsbc.ca) or Alberta (www.alsab.ca). She carried me under her heart. She loved me before I was born. She took God's hand in hers, and walked through the valley of shadows that I might live. From the poem "My Mother" found in the old log home of Kae's grandparents in Clandeboye, Manitoba.
