Obituary

On Tuesday, September 06, 2011 Margerie (Marge to all who knew her) passed away suddenly at the age of 75 years in Edmonton. She will forever be remembered by her husband Clifford and their four children, Melanie Omeniho, Leslie (Doyle) Moncrieff, Tracy Friedel and Dale (Jacqueline) Friedel, her daughter Luanne Cunningham, her grandchildren Andrea Vendittelli, Anita Vendittelli-Arce, Tricia Vendittelli, Janice Friedel, Meghan Omeniho, Emily Friedel, Laura (Darren) Snyder, Nonnie Moncrieff, Addlore Friedel and Samuel Friedel, her great grandchildren Andrew Vendittelli, Gracie Snyder and Sloane Cottrell. Also remembering Marge everlastingly are Deborah Poirier, Malcolm Emerson, Aaron Parlee, her sisters Delores (Brian) Burke and Joy Cunningham, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and many cherished friends and colleagues. Marge was predeceased by her brother, Roderick and by her parents, Lily and Montrose Cunningham. Born into a strong Métis family in Lac St. Anne, Alberta, Marge was raised for much of her childhood in the Coal Branch in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. She has long been a strong advocate for First Nations and Métis education in the City of Edmonton and Province of Alberta including at the University of Alberta where she has acted in a variety of capacities over many years. Marge was a valued member of the Métis Nation of Alberta Elders’ Council and a founding Elder of Amiskwaciy Academy (Edmonton Public Schools’ Aboriginal junior and senior high). A viewing and celebration of Marge’s life will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Amiskwaciy Academy gymnasium, 101 Airport Road (the former Edmonton Municipal Airport terminal). A red river cart procession will begin at 12:00 p.m. followed by the celebration and viewing at 1:00 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. A private interment will take place at a later date. The family will undertake the establishment of an academic scholarship in Marge’s name. Family and friends who so desire may make cheques payable to the University of Alberta and please include an accompanying note stating that this gift is to be directed to the Marge Friedel Award Fund.
