Obituary

S/Sgt (Ret.) Norm Muffitt Reg. # 21711 of St. Albert, Alberta passed away peacefully on August 19, 2011, with his wife by his side, after a short but brave fight with cancer. A loyal team of supporters stood by Norman and his family throughout his illness. He lived a life of courage, honor, service, humor and humility, and positively affected the lives of many. Norm will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years, Margaret “Peggy” Muffitt; daughter, Jennifer Jones and son-in-law Stewart of Hamilton, Ontario; grandchildren, Gillian (Karl) Grybas and Ryan Jones; great-grandson Maxwell; sister, Monda; sisters-in-law, Nancy (Richard) Bryant, Andrea Wylie and Laurie Burck as well as three nieces, five nephews, other extended family and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his father, KIA WWII RCAF Flight Lt. Edward “Ted” Muffitt; mother, Hester Konkle; stepfather, Paul Konkle and nephew, Ted Ellis. After learning to fly in Air Cadets, Norm joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at the age of 18. He served in the Highway Patrol, General Investigative Services and the Musical Ride before transferring to the RCMP Air Division as a pilot. In addition to bush flying in the Arctic and Western Canada, Norm flew dignitaries such as Princess Margaret, Pierre Trudeau and Joe Clark. He retired from the RCMP in 1986 and joined Transport Canada Aviation Enforcement, retiring as the head of Western Region in 2002. Norm was an active member of the RCMP Veterans, the Blue Knights and was also a past-president of the St. Albert Cosmopolitan Club. Additionally, Norman had a prolific 40 year career as an award-winning Cartoonist under the pen names, “Bush” and “Tink” and was an active member of the Association of Canadian Editorial Cartoonists. He drew for various publications in the North and Alberta, including The Yellowknifer, News/North, The Albertaner, The Mosaic, The Sherwood Park News and the Fort Saskatchewan Record. Norm received the RCMP Long Service Medal, Silver Jubilee Medal, and the Alberta Centennial Medal as well as the Belt of Orion Award for Excellence as a member of the RCMP Air Division from the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame in Wetaskiwin. In his spare time, Norm enjoyed motorcycling, RV-ing, golfing, writing, sky-diving, scuba diving, hot-air ballooning, skiing, and white-water rafting. He enjoyed camping in Jasper and was master of the “one-match campfire”. More than anything, Norm enjoyed socializing with his family and many friends from all over the world. Norm was a very caring man, and “adopted” several honorary daughters, sons and brothers during his life. He loved political discussion --or any battle of wits-- often into the wee hours of the morning. Norm was an animal lover who had many pets, and he frequently, yet discretely stopped into the local Humane Society to drop off a donation. The family cannot possibly give adequate thanks to all of Norm’s kind friends, and relatives who were so generous and thoughtful during his illness. Special thanks to Dr. Calder, Dr. Amigos and the excellent nursing staff at Grey Nuns Palliative Care. As per Norm’s wishes, a private cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 1:00 p.m., at the Alberta Aviation Museum, 11410 - Kingsway Ave, Edmonton, AB. Friends who wish to do so, may make memorial donations to the RCMP Veterans Association- Edmonton Division [Relief Fund], the Alberta Aviation Museum, Crimestoppers or any other charity of your choice.

In Loving Memory of
Norman Muffitt
