Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sheree, who died as she had lived, with courage and dignity, and with her beloved daughter Ruth and husband Doug by her side. Sheree was born in Newport, Vermont, USA and lived in Ayer’s Cliff, Quebec until 1964 when her family moved to Edmonton. After pursuing her love for literature in university, she began her career in 1979 teaching IB English in the Edmonton Public School System where she taught for 25 years. She touched the lives of hundreds of students and mentored many more with uncanny wisdom, wit and kind patience. After retiring from teaching, Sheree immersed herself in her writing. She obtained a Masters in English in 2003. One of her essays was a finalist for Canada’s National Magazine Awards in the category of personal journalism. Another was aired nationally on CBC Radio’s Sunday Edition. Sheree married Doug Ginter in 1989 and together they created a wonderful life founded on devotion, respect, loyalty, friendship, and filled with intellectual rigour, creativity, and above all, love. It is impossible to capture in words the extent of the love and dedication that Sheree had for her daughter Ruth. Mother and daughter had a sacred bond, one that has empowered Ruth with strength, compassion and humility. Driven by passion, loyalty and love, Sheree created a summer home in the house that her Grammie’s family grew up in on Clough St in Ayer’s Cliff. It was there that she provided her family with treasured memories of summer vacations and a solid sense of heritage. Sheree is forever loved and missed by her daughter Ruth and husband Doug; mother Lois Frappied; siblings: Lee, Josie, Lenn (Joanne); dear nieces and nephews: Arianna, Emma, Tasha, and Aiden; Aunties Donna and Debbie; Uncle Tom; Doug’s family Darrel (Leslie), Joel (Julie), and Ruby; special nephew Corey and niece Jody; and so many friends and colleagues. A special thank-you for their unfaltering love, support and compassion is given to Francie Ratner, Gail Gates, Kathleen Thurber, Lynda Shorten, Teresa Dobson, and Pennie Jack. We wish to extend out heartfelt gratitude to Sheree’s friend and physician Dr. Sandy Kavanagh who enabled Sheree to be at home during the most difficult of times. Sheree’s sister Lee was her invaluable companion and vigilant caregiver. This homage to Sheree cannot be complete without a quotation from the artist she most revered, William Shakespeare: Our wills and fates do so contrary run That our devices still are overthrown; Our thoughts are ours, their ends none of our own. A Celebration of Sheree’s life will be held at the Mayfair Golf and Country Club on Friday June 3, 2011 at 7:00 pm for her family and for those who knew her and want to share their memories of her with us. Sheree will be buried beside her beloved Grammie Doris and Grampa Gordon Hartson in Ayer’s Cliff, Quebec. A bursary in Sheree’s name is to be set up with the University of Alberta’s Department of English for the purpose of encouraging scholarship in Shakespeare. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sheree’s memory can be made to the Sheree Frappied Shakespeare Studies Fund, c/o the Department of English at the University of Alberta.
