Helen Josephine McHarg (Denkhaus) passed away peacefully on Monday, January 30, 2017. She was 76.
Helen will be missed by her surviving siblings, Hannelore, Marianne and Bob; husband, Ron; children, Greg, Shauna and Dana, and by other extended family members, spouses, and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, and sisters, Wilma, and Hilda.
Helen was born on June 16, 1940 to Heinz and Johanna Denkhaus. She was the fourth of six siblings, growing up on a farm near Onoway, Alberta. In 1957, Helen moved to Edmonton, and began to train for her nursing career. There, she met Ronald McHarg, and they were married in 1962. Ron and Helen raised three children, Greg, Shauna and Dana. She has two grandchildren, Jefferson and Madeline, whom she adored. She actively supported her family members in pursuing their interests, their education and, later, their careers. Helen returned to her work as a nurse in 1976, and continued, with dedication and kindness, until she retired in 1998. Helen loved being active outdoors, particularly in the summer. She grew a bountiful vegetable garden, year after year. She also enjoyed running and walking in the summer and curling in the winter. Music remained a joyful passion for Helen, right to the end of her life. All those around her could not help but know of her favourite performers and songs.
Helen was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2003. She continued to live her life with joy and enthusiasm even as her illness progressed. Her family would like to express gratitude for the years of care provided by Dr. Thomas Ranieri, and by the staff of Unit 10Y at the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre.
