On April 28, 2011, Jesus (Jess) Diaz Vasquez passed away quietly in Renton, WA after struggling for several weeks with pneumonia. A long-time resident of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Teresa Mayordomo Vasquez and daughter, Maria Cecilia Koszarycz (Yuriy).
Jess, born in Placer, Philippines and emigrated to Canada in 1965. He was a pioneer of the Filipino community in Alberta, assisting new Filipino immigrants in their transition to Canada. Later in life, he and Teresa focused on the rights and needs of the Filipino Senior Community through their work with the Golden Horizons Senior Society, Radio Filipino on CKER, and Philippine Horizon newspaper. He will be greatly missed by his daughter, Mari Joy (Mario) Angsioco; sons, Tomas Dennis (Levy) and Jose Dino (Ann); many grandchildren; brothers and sisters in the Philippines; numerous nephews, nieces, and godchildren.
A Prayer Service for Jess will be held at 7:00 pm on Sunday, May 8, 2011, at Connelly McKinley Funeral Home, 10011 – 114 Street, Edmonton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Monday, May 9, 2011, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 10661 – 82 Avenue, Edmonton. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Edmonton.
