On May 1, 2011 Betty passed away at age 90, peacefully at home and surrounded by loved ones.
She was predeceased by her parents William and Helen Fetherstonhaugh (nee Butler) and brother William “Billy”.
With gratitude for her long and joyous life, Betty is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 67 years Gerard “Gerry”; children, Mary (Bob McKeon), Peter (Cathy Roy), Margaret (Michael Arbour), Monica (Eckhart Marenholtz), Helen (Dave Piper), Michael, Elizabeth (Bart Szoke), and John; fifteen grandchildren; one great grandchild; and caregiver, Rhoda Rodriguez.
Betty was born November 2, 1920 in Prince Rupert, B.C. and grew up in Calgary, Alberta. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Alberta, where she met Gerry at the Newman Center. They were married in Calgary on December 6, 1943, and lived in Edmonton, raising 8 children. Betty was a devoted wife and mother, an energetic and able supporter of Gerry’s legal and political career, faithful volunteer for various organizations, avid badminton and tennis player into her 80’s, and warm friend to many. Our deepest gratitude to Rhoda Rodriguez, Monica Marenholtz and Thea Rodriguez for their dedicated care of Betty that added immeasurably to the quality of her life and the peacefulness of its ending.
A Prayer Service will be held at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011 - 114 Street, Edmonton on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. Reverend Jozef Wroblewski will celebrate a Funeral Mass on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 9830-148 Street, Edmonton.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Betty’s memory to the Edmonton Inner City Housing Society or to Development and Peace.
