Obituary

The family of Bob Bateman is saddened to announce that Bob passed away on April 19, 2011 after a battle with cancer. Bob is survived by his wife Anita and their children: Joanne Joly and her children Tomas, Jackson, and Samuel; Michael and Traci Bateman and their children Wilson and Maxwell; and Deanne and Greta Bateman and their children Emanuel , Roman, and Alexa. Bob will also be remembered by his four sisters: Mary Agnes Radostits (Ivan), Sheila Bateman, Jane Thomas (Lloyd), and Audrey Edwards. Bob was predeceased by his brother Jim Bateman (Rose). Bob was born and raised in Old Strathcona and spent his entire life attached to the area. After graduating from St. Maryís High, Bob went to work at his fatherís grocery store. In 1965 he married his high school love, Anita Goertz. In 1968, Anita and Bob (with the support of Ken Quinn and Horne and Pitfield Foods) opened Southgate I.G.A. In 1970, Bob formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, Ivan Radostits and together they purchased Bateman Foods from Bobís father Tubby. Bateman Foods grew to eventually include eight I.G.A.ís and 14 Red Rooster stores. Bob\'s proudest business achievement was the implementation of the Bateman Foodsí partnership program. Batemanís offered any store manager the opportunity to purchase their own I.G.A. store with the financial support of Batemanís in exchange for part ownership. Over Bobís 30 years as President of Bateman Foods, 13 people took advantage of this program and became independent store owners. Bob also took pride in the fact that his children followed him into the food business. Michael owns the Sobeys store in Belmont, Joanne owns the Wild Earth Grocery on 99th Street, and Deanne and Greta own the Wild Earth Bakery & Cafe also on 99th Street. Anita and Bob feel fortunate that for the last 20 years, they were able to spend the winters in Arizona where they established many great friendships. Cremation and a private funeral have been arranged. The family invites you to join them in a celebration of Bobís life at the Edmonton Marriott at River Cree Resort on Thursday, April 28, 2011. Cocktails at 5:00 p.m. and food at 7:00 p.m. with an informal program to follow. During the evening, representatives of the Zebra Child Protection Agency will be in attendance to accept donations in Bobís memory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Zebra by contacting Barb Spencer at 780-421-2016. Please email positive responses to the event to celebratebob@batemanfoods.com by Monday, April 25.
