At the U of A Hospital, on September 28th, 2010 in the early morning, our beloved Mary went with her guardian angel to a world beyond this one.
Mary was an unusually youthful 86 year old with a delightful way of being in the world. Her cultivated sense of humor helped her and others deal with difficult and trying times in her life. She certainly was well versed at laughing at herself. Mary was someone who was happiest in the kitchen whether it was whipping up a creative recipe from one of countless cookbooks, or joined at the table every week with her mahjongg group.
Mary Collister, nee Harkness, born and raised in Australia, immigrated to Canada in the early 50’s where she “secretly” married Ron Collister, originally from England, who was, until meeting the red-haired vivacious Aussie, a confirmed bachelor.
They spent some time in Washington D.C. where Ron was a correspondent and their family started with Judith Ann. They then settled down in Ottawa where they added a second daughter, Jennifer Barbara to their fold.
In 1978 the family headed west to Edmonton, where Mary was the quintessential domestic engineer, supporting Ron’s work as an editor for the Edmonton Sun newspaper, and then as a radio personality.
All her extended family remained in her country of origin where she and Ron travelled many times over the years.
The family will be holding a celebration of her life in January, 2011.
Mary is pre-deceased by her husband and survived by daughters Judy and Jenny, former Son in law Steven Elliot and grand-daughter Katelyn.

Mary was a sheer joy and a gift to this world. She will be greatly missed.
