Obituary

With family by her side, Jadwiga Pierzchajlo went to be with our Lord on January 19th, 2011. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 64 years, Rajmund; children Richard (Melissa), Megan, Jan (Patti), and Karl (Caren); grandchildren Carol, Joseph, Katie, Stephen, Mark, David, Kristen, Lukas, Garret, Noah; great-grandchildren Ellie and Jake and numerous family and friends.

Jadwiga was born in Pilatkowce, Poland on April 10, 1919 where she began a life of hard work and perseverance. Following the turmoil of the war years she met her beloved husband. After earning her BA in Germany they immigrated to Canada in 1949 where she worked at hospitals in Rimbey and Calgary. She completed her B.Ed at the University of Alberta in 1954, then spent thirty years teaching in Edmonton Catholic Schools.

Following her retirement in 1983 she stayed busier than ever as an active and passionate member of the Catholic and Polish-Canadian communities, serving on many Boards and Committees. Of particular note, she was instrumental in helping over 2,000 Polish refugees immigrate to Canada during the Solidarity years. She also founded the Polish Seniors Friendship Club in 1987, was an active leader with the Polish-Canadian Women’s Federation, Catholic Women’s League, and the Local Council of Women.

Jadwiga’s life was truly an inspiration. An accomplished teacher, community leader, mentor, traveler, humanitarian, and family matriarch, she accomplished her life’s goals, and then set about helping others to achieve a better life.

Special thanks to Dr. Randy Naiker for his compassionate care over the years, and the staff at the Misericordia Hospital ICU.

A Prayer Service will be held at 8:00 pm on Friday, January 28th, at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011 – 114 St., Edmonton. Reverend Kazimierz Kozicki, OMI will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, January 29th at 10:00 am at Holy Rosary Church, 11485 – 106 St, Edmonton. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Polish Canadian Humanitarian Society, #423, 1130 Tory Road, Edmonton, AB, T6R 3W2.
