Katherine Preston died peacefully in her sleep on December 19, 2010. She was born Caterina Laudenbach in Militics, Batcha, in the former Yugoslavia, on September 21, 1928. Before the age of one, she immigrated to Canada with her parents, settling in the southern Ontario town of Seaforth. In 1951, she married Peter Preston and together they raised seven children. She worked as an operating room nurse in London and Kingston, Ontario, before starting her family. When she went back to work, she worked with severely physically and mentally handicapped children at the Eric Cormack Center in Edmonton. In Calgary she worked in a day care and as a sacristan at St. Gerard’s Catholic Parish in Calgary.
She is predeceased by her daughter, Susan Preston, her parents, Ludwig and Susanna Laudenbach. She is survived by her husband, to whom she was married for 58 years, and her children, Katherine Preston McCann (Reg), Elizabeth Russell (Reg), Paul (Suzanne Béland), Joseph (Lorraine), Michael (Barbara) and Mary Clare (Bill Wheeler). She has 15 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her three brothers, Joseph, John and Michael Laudenbach and her sister, Marian Goyette.
